Strange pixel garbage on screen with Matrox G450

Hello all. Trying to get Feisty on my wife's computer up and running but there's this really strange behavior with the video card driver with the Matrox Millenium G450 Dual head. No matter what resolution or refresh rate that the driver supports there's this flickering of pixels which leaves little specs on the screen looking like random noise. If you drag a window around a lot it gets really bad.

I tried downloading the driver from Matrox and another driver that was posted on some site but both give the following error when I attempt to run the shell script:

The X server drivers included in this installation package do not support the current version of your X server. Any ideas? I spent a week convincing her to switch over from XP but this will be a show stopper. Any help much appreciated.
Back to XP it is.
That's sad.  Anyways, about the error message, you could always try and install an older version of  and run the script then, but that's a pretty crap solution.  Talking of pixel garbage I have some strange pixel garbage when coming out of standby, it goes when the desktop appears on the screen, quite weird.

I know it's the card - old flaky card. The older Windows driver was like that but when I update the driver it is fixed. Crap. I really wanted to blow away all Windows boxes in my home LAN. Oh well. I'll do it though when I get new hardware. I'll be damned if I'm going to buy anything that DOESN'T support Linux/.
