Devede .avi conversion problem

Hello!  I am new to , and using Feisty. I still don't understand all the vocab used in the forums, so please go easy on me.  

My trouble today is, I've been trying to use DeVeDe to convert .avi files into .iso files to watch on the tele.  It appears to be the easiest program to use... but doesn't work.  When I encountered the white noise problem in my playback - which seems to be a common Feisty problem - I found the Mencoder and Mplayer pieces I needed to replace, did the quot;gksudo nautilusquot; dance and put the new pieces in the usr/bin folder.  But, now when trying to add an .avi file to Devede, an error message tells me that the file is not recognized as a video file.  (I have tried .avi files of different sizes, to be sure it wasn't just one file that wasn't working.  

Any ideas on what to do next to make this work?   I'm not cool with using command line based programs like Tovid, I would rather just make THIS program do it's job.

Well, using the fix for devede didnt fix a thing.  The answer here was the program TOVID.
