my user name/password by going to the Code prompt and typing in passwd don.  I gave up and took it back to the shop.  In one minute the techie had it straightened out. He had misunderstood what I had told him was my password.  However, the point is that while I was completely stuck on the opening screen of  and nothing proposed here worked, he was able in seconds to bring up a screen that allowed him to choose my password again. I still don't know how he did it.

Well if you boot into quot;recovery modequot; and type passwd [yourusername] should definitely work. What's the problem with it?

I was typing the wrong password because the techie had entered it wrong. He didn't go into recovery mode to make the change.  He went from the sign-in screen to something else in one or two clicks  and was able to type in the password change. I couldn't believe it.
