Can I make Gmail my default email so when I click on addresses in Web pages it goes to the Gmail Web page and populates the address in a new message window? I had it set up that way in Windows XP and it worked perfectly. I am not looking to have POP access to Gmail through some default email client--I want to use Web-based Gmail only.
Thanks very much.
How did you set it up in XP? That behavior seems like something you would have to set in your browser itself...maybe try repeating the process?
Here are the instructions from the Gmail Web site:
How do I make Gmail my default mail application?
You can designate Gmail as your default mailto handler. This means that when you click on any hyperlinked email address, a Gmail compose window will open so you can send a message to that address from Gmail.
To do so in Windows:
1. Download the Gmail Notifier. 2. Right-click the Notifier icon in your system tray, and select Options. 3. Check the box next to Use Gmail for internet mailto: links. 4. Click OK.
If you decide later that you don't want to use Gmail as your default email application, simply uncheck the box.Given that the Gmail Notifier does not work in Linux, I am wondering if there is some equivalent. I installed one of the alternate Gmail notifiers and it has no such option. Thanks very much
If you use Mozilla Thunderbird for your email you can use gmail with it , thats the way I do it

MintabiePete: Thanks but I do everything on the Web. I don't run many applications on my computer. Plus, I prefer the Gmail Web interface.
jusmurph: I'm not sure how that would help, it seems to be a notifier only and cannot set up Gmail as the default email for hyperlinked email addresses. Am I missing something?
Thanks.

That said, this is an area where it would be nice for gnome and kde to have a configuration dialog. Lots of people use webmail as their main mail. Even just a selection of a smattering of several common services (gmail, yahoo, msn) would help.
Give better G-mail a try it is a firefox extension. It works well for me.
Paradoxdruid: it looks like that is what I want! Thanks. I will have to work on it when I have more time because I know nothing about Linux and find some of that to be very confusing. Thanks again.
You can give Webmail Compose a try. You click on a mailto link and it'll automatically open up the specified webmail compose box. This website will help you get it installed: from : localhost/sas.sparklingstudios.com/arti...in-firefox-2-0 |
