WIRELESS Internt Problem. (Probably a Simple Solution)

Im new to ubuntu and have no clue what im doing. A friend helped me get my wireless internet working which was great, everything is connecting to my network and it shows other available networks but when connected none of my internet applications work ie: firefox, gaim. Please help and thank you in advance.
