ubuntu desktop setting up server server linux

I'm runnung feisty desktop edition. I want to set up a free (as in no cost and preferably open source) way of accessing my computer anywhere so that I may upload/download files at will. I want this to be secure and only be accessed by me or anyone I chose. Let's say password protected.

I'm not afraid of some good reading but I need up to date linux/ubuntu specific how  to's

If someone has done this before could you just list the programs that you used, as well as web sites that provide the domain. And of course a clear quot;where do I startquot; how to.

Thank you. I will look into if that is what I'm looking for. Sometimes it's hard knowing where to start with linux.

Another thought does linux server run as a live cd. I don't want to reinstall.  I just want to check it out.
