I'm posting this here because I've seen many people with far more knowledge than me. If it's wrong talking about this, please tell me and forgive me, it'll never happen again.

Some friends and I want to play online. Of course, there are many, many good online games out there. The problem is, I'm the only one in a group of 10 who runs Linux, so, I'm the minority, and they all love a Microsoft game related to world domain in an historic frame in realtime because it runs in both Win and Mac. So, here are my questions if any one knows an answer:
Do you know of any other similar game capable of running in Win, Mac and Linux? (I've already talked with these guys about Globulation and FreeCiv and they didn't like them)
Do you know if that game can runs in xfce? Specifically, Xubuntu 6.10 via wine or something. I ask because i know Xubuntu can't run some programs very well given its lightweighted management.
Sorry if my english is bad.
no windows games run natively in linux, but some will work in wine.
check out the wine database for info on what works and what doesnt

Since all your friends play that game, I'd suggest you to try to do the same. This can be done either by emulating it with Wine, or with dual-boot. Could you give us the name of the game, to check if it can be emulated?
Also, xfce is just your user interface, it won't affect the ability of a game to run under wine/cedega etc. If it runs under wine, it will run in xfce too.
It's Age of Empires II w. expansion. Sorry, I prefer not to Double-Boot (this HD is only 8 GB ) gonna check in the database. Thanks!

Not true. Many OpenGL-based Windows games will run natively in Linux, without the use of Wine. Wine is only required for games that use DirectX exclusively. For example, Neverwinter Nights, Doom 3, Quake 3, Unreal Tournament (as well as UT2003 and 2004) all run natively in Linux.
Codagh, no windows executable will run on GNU/Linux. The games you mention run without wine because they have separate GNU/Linux clients. The data used (textures, graphics, etc) is the same, while the executables are different.
So, even if a game uses OpenGL exclusively, the game developers still need to provide a GNU/Linux native executable.
Semantics. Regardless of how they are run, they are running natively and they wouldn't be able to run natively if they weren't OpenGL-based first. Making a blanket statement that quot;no windows games run nativelyquot; is just not accurate, when there are Windows games that have freely availble Linux clients. It's not like you have to go out and buy the quot;Linux onlyquot; version of Neverwinter Nights to play on Linux; you buy the Windows version and install it with the Linux client from Loki.
The only true blanket statement is that DirectX exclusive games will not run natively on Linux, since DirectX and the Windows executable are not supported.
But then there's Wine...
No, it is not semantics. You stated that OpenGL games generally run on GNU/Linux. Try running WoW without wine (yes, it is OpenGL).
For example, UT does not have a GNU/Linux client on the installation CD. You have to download it separately. Saying quot;the same copy of UT that runs on Windows will also run natively on GNU/Linuxquot; is doubly incorrect for that reason.
Do not mislead people. It is not in the spirit of . No offence meant.
you also have this choice, it is a great game, it has versions that run on Linux, Macs, and Windoze.

I did not say that OpenGL games quot;generally runquot; and I did not even remotely imply that. Many OpenGL-based games will run natively in Linux, that's the truth. The statement that no Windows game will run natively on Linux was misleading. I pointed out why that was misleading and even suggested several games that will work on both Windows and Linux. The fact that playing one of these games might require you to download a Loki client is really quite irrelevant to the question asked. Andycyca never asked how can he play games with his Windows and Mac friends, he just wanted to know what games he could play. |
