Banshee wont play music, no codecs

I just downloaded banshee music player and i am trying to play the music off of my ipod. it attempts to play every single song but it wont.  and next to the song title appears a red circle with a white dash in the center. and in paranthesis beside the circle it says quot;no codec.quot; how do i fix this?
